USA Gymnastics will take abortion laws into consideration when it comes to selecting venues for competitions. USA Gymnastics president Li Li Leung said Wednesday there is “no question” abortion laws will play a factor in whether a state is chosen to host events like the U.S. championships. The 2022 U.S. Gymnastics championships were awarded to Tampa, Florida, in January, months before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. After that decision, Florida banned abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with limited exceptions. Leung said the Supreme Court’s decision “took away” from the organization’s value system.

The Tennessee Titans have waived tight end Briley Moore to make room for safety Tyree Gillespie, who was acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Titans announced the moves Wednesday with Tennessee sending a conditional seventh-round draft selection in 2024 to the Raiders for Gillespie. The 6-foot Gillespie was a fourth-round pick in 2021 and played 11 games as a rookie for the Raiders. Gillespie started 27 of 41 games played in four years at Missouri. He is the third safety the Titans have added this month.

George Springer broke a scoreless tie with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 behind a stellar effort by Ross Stripling. Springer’s liner to center was career hit No. 1,000, and Toronto poured it on from there. Santiago Espinal followed Springer with a two-run double, and Alejandro Kirk capped the Blue Jays’ six-run seventh with another two-run double. Toronto won for the third time in 11 games. It broke through against the Orioles’ bullpen after Stripling carried a perfect game into the seventh. Baltimore could have moved into an AL wild-card spot with a win. The Orioles are 10-5 in August.

The Los Angeles Sparks have opened a national search for their next head coach while also seeking a new general manager. The team says Fred Williams has left for a new job as associate head coach at Auburn. Williams took on the interim coaching tag after Derek Fisher was fired as head coach in June. The team failed to make the playoffs this season and finished with a 13-23 record.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the team had no indication quarterback Drew Lock had COVID-19 symptoms until the end of practice a day earlier. Carroll says he was disappointed that Lock wouldn't get the chance to start Thursday's preseason game against Chicago. Carroll says Lock reported no symptoms prior to the start of Tuesday’s practice but by the end of the session was feeling worn down. Carroll said this is the second time Lock has contracted COVID-19 after getting it last year while playing for Denver. Lock is in a competition with Geno Smith to be Seattle's starting QB.

The early exits by New Orleans Saints wide receiver Jarvis Landry and offensive tackle James Hurst exemplified how the second day of joint practices with the Green Bay Packers got much more physical than the first. Wednesday’s scrimmage featured three scuffles. The first skirmish came in the opening minutes and sent Landry to the locker room. The more noteworthy issue for the Saints was Hurst’s departure because of a foot injury. Saints coach Dennis Allen said he would have no update on Hurst’s status “until we get a chance to delve into it a little bit more.”

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu routed Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday in the second round of the Western & Southern Open. The 19-year-old Raducanu won the final seven games against Serena Williams on Tuesday and the first 10 against Azarenka. Seeded 13th, Raducanu set up a match against No. 8 Jessica Pegula. Sixth-ranked Simona Halep withdrew because of a right thigh injury before facing Veronica Kudermetova. Halep won last week in Toronto. In an all-English men’s second-round match, 11th-ranked Cameron Norrie outlasted three-time Grand Slam-champion Andy Murray 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.  Also, Taylor Fritz beat Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-2.

Cooper and Bridger French, a senior and junior, respectively, on the Coconino football team, have each had their own forms of success. Part of their individual skill comes from their shared bond and willingness to lift the other up.

Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule has been adamant for weeks that he wouldn’t rush to announce a winner in the ongoing quarterback competition between Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. He says that hasn’t changed, even with his team just days from taking the field for their second exhibition game. Rhule had previously indicated he wanted to have the situation settled. That could still happen, but he says he's willing to extend the competition all the way to the end of training camp if he feels that's what's needed.
